Farewell 2012, hello Cybils

Happy New Year to all my blog readers! 2013 will be my first full year of blogging and I’m looking forward to finding and sharing some great kids’ apps this year. Before we look ahead, I wanted to flag up a couple of Best of 2012 lists which might be useful.

Visit Kirkus Reviews for a great book app list

and Apps Playground for 100 titles, both stories and activities

cybils2012mediumLast but very definitely not least, the finalists of the 2012 Cybils Awards were announced today! The Cybils are given each year by book bloggers for the year’s best children’s and young adult titles, including a Book App category. The Round 1 judges have somehow managed to whittle down a great field of nominations to five finalists, which are:

Bats! Furry Fliers of the Night
written by Mary Kay Carson; created by Ellen Jacob
developed by Bookerella and Story Worldwide

Dragon Brush
created by John Solimine and Andy Hullinger
developed by Small Planet Digital

Rounds: Franklin Frog
written by Emma Tranter, illustrated by Barry Tranter
developed by Nosy Crow Apps

The Voyage of Ulysses
developed by Elastico Srl

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery
written by Jamie Lee Curtis, illustrated by Laura Cornell
developed by Auryn, Inc

Congratulations to all five finalists! Read more here http://www.cybils.com/2012-finalists-book-apps.html

I’ll be seeing a lot of these apps over the next few weeks, as along with fellow bloggers I’ll be helping to pick the winner. I’ve only seen Franklin Frog so far, so can’t wait to read the others. It will also be really interesting to review book apps for children older than my own. Wish us luck, I can see long and interesting discussions ahead!
