Savouring Summer
So, today is the first day of the summer holidays where we are. I have seven and a half weeks to fill. Seven. And. A. Half. Weeks. I’m the sort of mum who is filled with dread at the idea of no preschool, no groups, no organised activities … how to fill the days? Help! So when I read a blog post by Karin at @cafebebe about parents helping each other to Savour Our Summer it really struck a chord. She says, “What about a Support Group where we can share ideas, report our plans and share our victories?” And so, she has launched the #cafebebesos Savour Our Summer Support Group. My plan, in addition to nabbing everyone else’s good ideas, is to write a weekly blog post about a whole day’s activities planned around one of our current favourite apps. Hopefully this will be a fun way to integrate technology with arts and crafts, books, play and outdoor activities. Wish me luck, and look out for the first post next week.
If you would like to take part, just visit Cafe Bebe Savour Our Summer.
Why not suggest to 2 or three friends in a similar situation that you’ll organise an activity ( cake making, handpainting, hide and seek, treasure hunt in a garden, pass the parcel, games in the park etc) one afternoon a week and they can come and join in and then they each do the same. That’s three days with something only one of which you have to sort.
Or find a challenge which interests them which keeps their learning skills active. EG get a world map and find the country everytime one is mentioned in the Olympics, or aim to collect as many different tree leaves as possible and identify them, or learn one French word a day ( eg please, thank you, dog, door etc)
Or Plant some seeds which grow quick eg cress and watch them grow
Or get out some old sheets/rugs, cushions etc, clothes airer etc and move the furniture round in their bedrooms and turn it into a den. Ignore the chaos! let them sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag- or put a tent up in someone’s garden and use it as a temporary play room or if adventurous, camp out overnight
Try not to resort to endless time in front of a TV sceen – I found it made my two either irritable or tired!

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions, I love the idea of sharing the load with friends. Hopefully the good weather will continue, always easier to be more active when the sun is shining!
