The Champion Hare – giveaway

Champion Hare and HyenaThe Champion Hare is the uplifting story of a small hare who enters a sports competition alongside a host of other animals. In every event he tries his very best. But he is always pipped at the post, until at the end of the competition he is surprised to learn that he may just have won something after all…

This is a great app to download for children of preschool or early primary school age, with the Olympic Games just around the corner. It promotes very positive messages about trying your best, not giving up, and celebrating the achievements of others, as well as enjoying your own victories. It introduces them to different athletic events, and highlights the strengths of different animals from around the world, such as the cheetah’s speed or the kangaroo’s jumping skills.

As you read the story, you can press on the animals to show the events taking place. There are fewer bells and whistles than in some other apps, but the strong rhyming story by Gwen Christie and colourful illustrations by Paul Wrangles don’t really need much embellishment. The narration is very clear and although there is no whole-book Read to Me option, it is easily triggered by tapping on the text box on each page. There are some fun touches such as the cheeky meerkats pictured throughout the book, and little insects to seek out who then wriggle and fly across the page.

There are no extras in the app itself, but you can find a whole host of free resources to download at including banners, puzzles, Olympic information sheets, snap cards, bingo and many more.
